If the garden house is not right next to your own house, but in an allotment garden or on a leisure property, it makes sense to occasionally spend the night in the arbor. Comfortably furnished, the house can also serve as a holiday home or offers space for overnight guests.

Can you sleep in a garden shed?

Sleeping in a garden house is possible as long as it is on your own property or leisure property. In allotment gardens, garden houses are subject to the Federal Allotment Garden Act and may not be permanently inhabited, although occasional overnight stays are often permitted. Adequate amenities and sleeping accommodations are important for comfort.

Spend the night in the allotment garden

As long as the arbor is on your own recreational property or in the garden, you can sleep in it as often as you want. Things look a little different if you are the tenant of an allotment garden that is subject to the Federal Allotment Garden Act. These areas are considered public green spaces; According to legal regulations, the garden houses located there may not be equipped for residential use. However, occasionally staying overnight is usually not a problem, so you don't necessarily have to drive home after a fun barbecue evening with the neighbors.

The equipment

First of all, the garden house should of course have sufficient floor space so that you can set up beds temporarily or permanently. Also useful are:

  • A power connection or a solar system with a battery that powers the light, hotplates or coffee machine.
  • If you want to use the arbor to stay overnight in spring or autumn when the nights are cool, a heater makes sense.
  • So that the room climate is pleasant, you should, if possible, choose an arbor with thicker walls. Alternatively, it may be worthwhile to insulate the walls of the garden house.

The right sleeping accommodations

If you only rarely want to spend the night in the arbor, folding camping loungers (€99.00 on Amazon) prove to be extremely practical. They offer good lying comfort and can be stowed away to save space after use.

If the garden house is spacious and you sleep there regularly on the weekends, narrow beds or a double bunk bed are a comfortable alternative. If the arbor offers plenty of room to move upwards, you can also integrate a loft bed or a sleeping loft.

Tip

If you would like to make structural changes, such as installing a small kitchen or a wet room with a toilet in the arbor, you will need permission from the responsible building authority. Sometimes the statutes of the allotment garden association prohibit such installations, so take a look at these documents before you start renovating the garden house.
