Butterfly lilac, Chinese lilac Buddleia has many names. The shrub or sub-shrub is popular with many garden owners, especially because of its very lush flowers that occur between July and September. However, the plant is also the perfect choice when it comes to closing an unsightly gap or covering garbage cans or a gray concrete wall - Buddleja davidii in particular is considered to be both strong and fast-growing.
What planting distance should you keep for buddleia?
For the planting distance of buddleia (Buddleja), 150 centimeters is recommended for solitary plantings, while 80-100 centimeters is ideal for group or hedge plantings. Smaller varieties such as 'Nanho' are well suited to pot cultivation.
Planting distance depends on species and variety
Most varieties of Buddleja davidii grow up to 300 centimeters high and 200 centimeters wide. For these varieties you should plan a planting distance of 150 centimeters if you want to plant the shrub as a solitary plant. If, on the other hand, a group or hedge planting is planned, a distance of between 80 and 100 centimeters is recommended. Buddleja alternifolia also reaches similar dimensions and should be planted at the same planting distance - however, this species is not as easy to cut back as B. davidii, which is why the dimensions must be adhered to.
Tip
If you want to cultivate buddleia in a pot, it is better to use smaller varieties such as 'Nanho' or species such as the ball buddleia (Buddleja globosa) and the yellow buddleia (Buddleja x weyeriana).
