You can basically set up the fire pit anywhere there is a small, paved area and there are no flammable objects in the immediate vicinity. Such a place does not necessarily have to be in the middle of the garden or on the edge, as a cozy fire can also be lit on the terrace.
How to design a fire pit on the patio?
A fire pit on the terrace can be set up with fire baskets, fire bowls, brick grills or garden fireplaces or swivel grills. It is important to have a fireproof surface and sufficient distance from flammable objects and seating.
Suitable fire pits for the terrace
On the terrace, however, you cannot simply light a campfire on the terrace floor for obvious reasons: they would very much resent such treatment. Ergo, the fire should always be in a fireproof container. Nevertheless, the terrace floor itself must also be fireproof or the fireplace must be on such a surface. Even flying sparks should not set fire to furniture or wooden floors.
Fire baskets and fire bowls
So-called fire baskets (€38.00 on Amazon) made of iron or fire bowls are very suitable for the terrace, and an old car rim can also be quickly converted into a fireproof container. These open containers make it easier for you to dispose of ashes and also stay dry when not in use by simply turning them over. Place the seasoned logs in the trough, making sure not to use fresh wood or even garden debris. It is allowed to burn kitchen waste - this quickly leads to nasty arguments with the neighbors because of the resulting smoke. Also, don't throw away the ashes the next morning because they will often still be hot and you will burn your fingers.
Barbecue or garden fireplace
Instead of an open fireplace, you can also use a barbecue or garden fireplace made of clinker bricks or fireclay bricks on the terrace. Various models are available to buy as ready-made kits. Fireplaces with a classic, cuboid combustion chamber usually have slots for a grill grate. This means you can use the first embers to grill a steak or freshly caught fish.
Swivel Grill
A swivel grill can be used not only for grilling, but also as a fire pit. You can light the fire in the early afternoon so that the wood has time to develop the appropriate embers. Then, if necessary, swing the grill grate over it and place the meat and fish on it. Baked potatoes are cooking between the coals and everyone holds their bread stick over the fire.
Seating around the fire pit
Seating areas around open fires should always be placed at a sufficient distance so that clothing and people are not damaged by flying sparks. Conventional chairs and benches are suitable, but you can also get creative and offer, for example, wooden stumps, entire tree trunks or even large boulders.
Tip
In contrast to a real campfire, you do not need any official approval for a fixed fire pit on the terrace. Nevertheless, you should talk to your neighbors and position the fire so that smoke and grill smells do not disturb the people living next to you.
