How do you plant a field maple correctly?
To plant a field maple successfully, you should plant it during the optimal planting time in autumn until the first frost, choose a sunny to partially shaded location, dig a spacious planting pit, cover the excavation with horn shavings (€52.00 on Amazon) and compost, plant the field maple, water it sufficiently and, if necessary, make a planting cut.
Is there an optimal planting time?
Deciduous trees, such as field maple, can be purchased as inexpensive root products during the cold season. This fact significantly reduces the cost of a hedge. The most advantageous planting time is from autumn until the first frost. On the other hand, you can plant young plants in containers or bales in the ground throughout the entire frost-free season.
Which location conditions are advantageous?
Field maple is classified as a pioneer tree, which is reflected in its pronounced tolerance to the location. Acer campestre will bring you a lot of joy in any sunny to semi-shady location with normal garden soil. Only in the shade and in acidic or wet soil does growth fall far short of expectations.
What is important for perfect planting?
A mass holder prefers to spread its roots in loose, weed-free soil. Soak the roots in water in advance until no more air bubbles appear. Only remove containers immediately before planting. However, bale cloths must not be removed. These rot over time on their own. This is how you plant field maple correctly:
- Dig spacious planting pits with twice the volume of the root ball
- Planting distances: root products 20-25 cm, container and bale products 70-80 cm, solitary plants ideally 500 cm
- Mix the excavation with horn shavings (€52.00 on Amazon) and ripe compost
- Plant field maple at the same depth as before
- Water abundantly and regularly on the day of planting and afterwards
Then root crops should be cut back by about a third to compensate for the lost root volume. For container and bale goods, a planting cut is advantageous if you are aiming for extra bushy growth.
Tip
As a heart-rooted tree, field maple spreads its roots in all directions. As decades of observations by tree experts have shown, horizontal growth is much more pronounced. Even at the age of 60, maple roots rarely reach a depth of more than 1.00 to 1.50 m, so there is no serious threat to sewer pipes.
