A slot maple creates its picturesque foliage where the right site conditions can be found. This overview summarizes the most important framework conditions for Asian maple species with slotted leaves.
Where should a slot maple be planted?
The ideal location for a slot maple is sunny to partially shaded, warm, protected from the wind and without blazing midday sun. The soil should be nutrient-rich, fresh and moist, well-drained and not waterlogged. Increased humidity near bodies of water is beneficial.
Fundamental location criteria – in brief
Although slot maple is not part of the natural inventory of our forests, it already has robust winter hardiness thanks to its Asian origins. In order for the immigrated deciduous tree to achieve its wonderful properties in the Central European climate, the following site conditions are important:
- Sunny to semi-shady location
- No blazing sunlight at lunchtime
- Warm and protected from the wind
- Nutritious, fresh, moist garden soil
- Well drained and without waterlogging
The delicate Acer palmatum feels best in the light shade under majestic deciduous trees. The more colorful the leaves, the sunnier the place should be. The Asian Japanese maple is very comfortable with increased humidity, so a location close to a pond, stream and waterfall is advantageous. In these locations, however, it must be ensured that its shallow root system does not become waterlogged.
