When the lilacs bloom, spring has really arrived - a short time later all the other plants sprout and the world becomes green and colorful with all the flowers. With cut lilac flowers you can bring spring into your home, including the characteristic sweet lilac scent. Read this article to find out how you can keep them in the vase for longer.
Can you keep lilacs in your apartment?
Lilac cannot be cultivated indoors because the shrub needs seasonal changes, wind and plenty of sun. An alternative is to keep it in a large bucket on the balcony or terrace.
Cutting lilac flowers early in the morning
So that the lilac bouquet stays fresh for as long as possible, you should cut the flower shoots early in the morning if possible. Flower stems are best,
- whose flower buds are not yet fully open
- and which are only slightly leafy.
Don't just snap off the shoots, but cut them directly at the base of the stem with a sharp knife or scissors. The cut edge should be slightly slanted, this will make it easier for the shoot to absorb water later.
How to make lilacs last longer in the vase
Sometimes it is advised to flatten the stem ends as this will extend the life of the lilac flowers. Unfortunately, exactly the opposite is the case, because this measure damages the ducts and makes water absorption more difficult. The shoots dry out more quickly. Instead, these remedies help ensure longer blooms in the vase:
- Cut the stem ends several centimeters deep.
- How to increase the recording area.
- Then briefly dip the ends in hot water.
- Now place them in lukewarm water.
- The vase is best placed in a bright, but not directly sunny location.
- It shouldn't be too warm, otherwise the lilac will wither more quickly.
- Change the water daily.
- Do not add sugar or similar to food - this is just a breeding ground for fungi.
Lilac flowers are not edible
Even if you read this “tip” again and again on various websites about medicinal herbs etc.: Lilac flowers and other parts of the plant are not suitable for consumption or for preparing teas and the like. They taste very bitter and are considered slightly poisonous. Instead, you can use the flowers and fruits of the black elderberry, which is also called “lilac” in some regions.
