In April, the early bloomers of February and March are left in the shadows. Until the summer blossom spectacle begins, the balcony is not doomed to be colorless. A variety of beautiful balcony plants build the floral bridge between spring and summer until the window of opportunity for summer planting opens in June. These plants bloom in balcony boxes and containers from April.
Which balcony plants are suitable for April?
Balcony plants such as herbs are very suitable in April. Various early bloomers such as primroses, fairy flowers and pasque flowers can also be planted. Flowering shrubs are also ideal. Before planting out, all plants should acclimatize in the fresh air for 14 days.
April beauties for the balcony box
April is the time for native natural hybrids to accompany us into early summer with their flowers. Charming elf flowers (Epimedium grandiflorum) with pretty, bluish-white flowers are recommended. Rustic pasqueflowers (Pulsatilla vulgaris) cause a sensation when their red or white cupped flowers unfold. The yellow flowers of the magical cowslip (Primula veris) shine in competition with the April sun.
Blooming skyscrapers in April – flowering trees for the balcony
On the balcony, flowering bushes in pots act as a solitary eye-catcher and a picturesque backdrop for flower boxes. When the summer bloomers are still holding back in April, the following skyscrapers unfold their flowers:

The balcony on the north side of the house is the refuge of shadow bells (Pieris japonica). The 'Purity' variety impresses with its elegantly overhanging white flower spikes. Combined with the pink-flowering variety 'Valley Valentine', spring-fresh color contrasts are created in April and May in low-light locations.
Tip
From mid-April, all balcony plants that have overwintered in the basement can get some fresh air. Before the Mediterranean and exotic perennials take their place in the sun, they have to acclimatize. A sudden move from inside the house to the sunny balcony inevitably causes leaf damage due to sunburn. Only a 14-day stay in partial shade protected from the wind can prevent this dilemma.
