A wooden bed border is relatively easy to build yourself, but you do need time. After all, the enclosure should be stable. Nevertheless, a wooden bed border is not as durable as a stone one, because wood weathers.
How can I make a wooden bed border myself?
To make your own wooden bed border, use weather-resistant wood such as oak, robinia, Douglas fir or larch. Design the border as a low palisade or weave young shoots from willow or hazel bushes. Alternatively, use prefabricated palisade elements from the hardware store.
Which wood is suitable for a bed border?
If you want to enjoy your wooden bed border for many years to come, then you should use durable wood for it. For example, Douglas fir, oak, larch and robinia are relatively weather-resistant, but they are not as inexpensive as soft wood. You should definitely treat soft and less weather-resistant wood before placing it in damp ground so that it does not rot too quickly.
Suitable woods for weather-resistant bed borders:
- Oak
- Robinie
- Douglas fir
- Larch
How to design a wooden flower bed border
A wooden border is not the same as a picket fence. You have numerous design options for a bed border. Low palisades are quite popular. They can be created at a uniform height or deliberately irregularly. Simply pound weather-resistant wood into the ground with a wooden hammer to the desired height.
The braided bed border
If you are reasonably skilled with your hands, then you can weave your bed border yourself. The young shoots of willows and hazel bushes are suitable for this. However, do not leave the cut shoots lying around for too long, otherwise they will dry and become hard. Then braiding will quickly become a real feat for you.
If the wood you need grows in your garden, then this edging is also very cost-effective. Both hazel bushes and willows can be cut back quite generously without causing permanent damage to the bush. So you can renew your edging at any time.
The quick tour
If you want to create a wooden bed border with very little effort, then buy prefabricated palisade elements from a hardware store (€25.00 on Amazon). These are round or semi-circular pieces of wood that are attached to each other with strips or wire. Elements with wire can be bent into different shapes or adapted to existing curves and easily hammered into the (loose) earth with a wooden hammer.
Tip
If your garden is extremely humid, then wooden bed borders may be less suitable or they may need to be replaced regularly.
