Bush beans don't grow particularly tall and therefore don't need any climbing support. Pole beans, on the other hand, hardly grow without climbing support. Here you will find beautiful, simple ideas for climbing your pole beans.
Why bush beans don't need a climbing aid
Bush beans reach a maximum height of half a meter and - as their name suggests - grow bushy. They also do not form loops to pull themselves upwards. Therefore, a climbing aid for bush beans is absolutely unnecessary. If you want to add greenery to a wall or fence, you should plant runner beans or runner beans instead.
Trail for climbing beans
Runner beans and runner beans are climbing beans and need climbing support. There are very different options that cost little to no money:
- Put one stick per bean vertically into the ground next to the plant.
- Build a tent out of climbing beans by ramming a stick into the ground in a circle at a distance of 30cm and tying them together in the middle. One climbing bean is planted per stick.
- If you have a chain link fence available, you can let your climbing beans climb up it.
- If you want to add greenery to a wall, you can do this using threads that are fastened and tensioned at the top and bottom with a screw or something similar.
- Climbing beans also climb horizontally! If you plant your climbing beans on the raised bed or choose a very tall growing variety, you can create a green roof with the pole or runner beans by pulling vertical strips that the climbing beans can hang along.
- If you like it creative, you can use stripping to create shapes and pull the beans along them. However, the beans need to be helped every now and then so that they don't get lost.
Tip
Both poles and runner beans can do without a trellis if they have enough hanging space. When grown on the balcony, for example, you can create an enchanting flower curtain from hanging beans.
