Pond filters ensure clear water where nature can no longer manage it. However, pond filters are not quite as easy to care for as the microorganisms in nature: they require a little maintenance and cleaning. You can read how to do this correctly in our article.
How do I clean my pond filter properly?
Clean pond filters by first switching off the filter system, taking out the filter sponges and squeezing them out thoroughly. During the current season, avoid rinsing the sponges completely to avoid disturbing the filter balance. In winter you can replace lamps and sponges.
Need for cleaning
Pond filters must also be cleaned during operation. This is generally not a difficult task, but above all it must be doneregularly and continuously.
A little more effort is required when the filter goes into winter operation. At this point you will need to take some additional measures.
Above all, when purchasing the filter system, make sure that the pond filter is sufficiently dimensioned. Systems that are slightly oversized and designed for a slightly larger amount of water than the pond actually has are definitely more advantageous in terms of cleaning than systems that are too small. These require a lot of maintenance.
Basic Cleaning
Many filter systems have a control display that shows when the filter needs to be cleaned. You should always follow this display and only clean when the device actually requires it.
Filter cleaning for filters with UVC system
UVC systems are usually easiest to clean. There is a “cleaning mode” that you can easily activate using a lever or switch. For other devices, you just need to turn off the UVC lamp.
Then you can simply squeeze out the filter sponges and squeeze them thoroughly. You should never rinse them out during the current season, otherwise you will seriously disrupt the filter balance.
You can then revive the filter bacteria (€14.00 on Amazon) using certain products - the lamp must then remain switched off during the exposure time (often several days). But this is not necessarily necessary for every cleaning.
After squeezing out the filter sponges, you can simply put the system back into operation. The pump usually continues to run undisturbed throughout the entire cleaning process.
Winter cleaning
Over the winter you usually have to remove and replace the lamp and rinse the filter sponges. If you want to put the system back into operation in the spring, everything will be put back together again.
Tip
Before installing the filter, be sure to familiarize yourself with the operating instructions and always follow them carefully. Incorrect operation can seriously disrupt the filter balance and thus significantly reduce system performance.
