The usually narrow strip in front of a hedge can be wonderfully planted with bulbous and summer flowers, perennials and shrubs. This way you can turn a boring hedge into a lively, colorful oasis in no time. However, the location is not entirely uncomplicated, which is why you should definitely take the following tips to heart.
Which plants are suitable for a flower bed in front of a hedge?
Sun-loving plants such as roses, lavender, Mediterranean herbs, steppe candles, euphorbia and peonies are suitable for a flower bed in front of a hedge. In shadier areas, hydrangeas, cranesbills, hostas, astilbes, purple bells, wild goat's beard and silver cohosh are ideal.
Special site conditions
Planting flowers in front of a hedge can be problematic: the location may be shady because a high hedge blocks the light. However, it can also be the case that the flower bed is directly in the sun - and can then heat up significantly due to the location protected from the wind. Furthermore, the type of hedge can cause problems, for example if it is a very shallow-rooted hedge plant. The root pressure is particularly high here, which is why you have to plan the planting accordingly - deep-rooted shrubs and perennials, planted between the main roots, are perfect here. Also note that hedges and flowerbeds can quickly come into competition for nutrients and water - regular watering and fertilizing is mandatory.
Suitable plants for hedge beds
Basically, the narrower the bed, the fewer species you should choose for the flower bed - otherwise it will quickly appear cluttered and chaotic. Three to five plants, always planted alternately, are completely sufficient for most hedge beds. The alternating planting of a bed strip with tall, bushy plants and small perennials looks pretty. When planting in multiple rows, the rule is that taller plants belong in the background, while lower plants belong in the front.
Sunny location
Roses are perfect for a sunny, hot location, best in combination with lavender. Not only does this look pretty, but it also keeps the aphids away. But Mediterranean herbs (which often bloom beautifully) as well as steppe candles, euphorbia, woolly ziest or peonies are also perfect here.
Partially shaded and shady location
If the hedge takes away too much light, shade-tolerant plants must be planted here. For example, hydrangeas, cranesbills, hostas, astilbes, purple bells, wild goat's beard or silver candle are wonderful.
Tip
When you prepare the flower bed in front of the hedge for planting, damage as little as possible to the roots of the hedge plants. Digging is often not possible; instead, loosen the soil carefully with a digging fork. Then apply plenty of ripe compost (€12.00 on Amazon) and horn shavings to ensure an adequate supply of nutrients.
