The laburnum is one of the most popular garden and park plants - not only because of its decorative, fragrant, golden yellow grape flowers, but also because it is pleasantly easy to care for. However, there are a few things to consider. We'll show you which ones.
How do you properly care for the laburnum?
Caring for the laburnum is uncomplicated: it tolerates different types of soil, requires little water, no fertilizer and is robust against diseases. However, make sure you prune sparingly and protect the sensitive roots with ground cover or ornamental onions.
The Tolerance of Laburnum
As a gardener you can be grateful for so much frugality with so much on offer. The noble laburnum, Laburnum watereri, doesn't require much to delight us and bees with its golden yellow, fragrant flowers.
It thrives in many soils, from fresh loamy to sandy and barren. The reason shouldn't be too sour. It also doesn't need a lot of sun, but can stand well in partial shade. Last but not least, it is also a true thirst artist and can easily survive long dry phases. It also doesn't need any fertilizer. It simply draws the nitrogen it needs to grow from the air.
So what you don't have to worry about:
- Location – soil just not too acidic, otherwise sunny to partially shaded
- Watering – can go without water for a long time
- Fertilization – provides the necessary nitrogen supply
What you should pay attention to
In some respects, you should still treat your laburnum with some caution. This applies especially to the cut and the roots.
Cut
You should cut the precious laburnum as little as possible. His cuts heal poorly and can easily rot. So be extremely economical when shaping and, if possible, only shorten small branches that are no thicker than two centimeters. If you leave it largely alone and allow it to develop freely, it will also give you more lush flowers
Rootwork
The laburnum forms a flat, fleshy root system that is relatively sensitive. In any case, it should not be damaged by intensive interventions in the soil. To protect it, underplanting with ground cover or ornamental allium has proven effective. The loose treetop means they get enough light to grow. In addition, purple-flowering ground plants in particular provide an attractive play of colors in combination with the golden yellow laburnum flowers.
Diseases and pests
Basically, laburnum is quite robust against pests and diseases - occasionally it can get downy mildew or scale insects. However, active control is generally not necessary.
