Sometimes it's time to redesign a garden, plant a hedge or loosen up existing structures. Then it is necessary to move perennials and shrubs, but not all of them tolerate this transplanting equally well.

How to successfully transplant a weigela?

A young weigela tolerates transplanting well if the root ball and fine roots are protected. Dig a larger planting hole for the root ball, mix in compost and water thoroughly after planting.

Can weigela tolerate transplanting?

The Weigela is not only hardy and quite easy to care for, it can also tolerate transplanting as long as you do it carefully. In addition, your Weigela should not be older than around four years when you move it.

What should I consider when transplanting?

When digging, be sure to keep in mind that the weigela has relatively shallow roots and forms a fairly extensive root ball. The less you damage it, the less the plant will suffer from the move. Therefore, pay particular attention to the sensitive fine roots. It is ideal to transplant on a rather overcast and not too hot day.

Dig a correspondingly large planting hole at the new location; it should be significantly larger than the root ball. Loosen the soil at the bottom a little and add a little rotted compost to the hole as starter fertilizer. Then insert the weigela, fill it with soil and water the plant well.

Transplanting step by step:

  • If possible, only transplant young
  • Do not damage roots
  • As a shallow-rooted plant, it has an extensive root ball
  • Dig a correspondingly large planting hole (approx. 1 ½ times as big as the bale)
  • Loose up the soil in the planting hole
  • put some compost in it
  • Insert Weigela
  • Fill up the soil and press or tap it down
  • Water the plant well
  • if necessary, mulch (retains moisture in the soil better)

Does the weigela need special care after transplanting?

In the first few weeks after transplanting, you should water your weigela regularly. If it has become firmly rooted after a while, it no longer needs any additional water. You can keep the soil around your weigela moist with a layer of bark mulch (€13.00 on Amazon). If it was transplanted late in the fall, light winter protection is recommended.

Tip

The older a weigela gets, the more it suffers from a change of location. That's why you should transplant these shrubs as young as possible.
