Hardly any other plant has had such an impact on European gardens as the boxwood: the evergreen plant was used as a bed border as early as ancient Rome, and from the 16th century onwards it began its triumphant advance thanks to its diverse range of uses. To this day, the uncomplicated boxwood can be found in almost every garden. When is the best time to plant a boxwood?
The optimal planting date for boxwood is in late summer, as the still warm temperatures make it easier for the tree to take root. However, planting is also possible in winter when the weather is frost-free or in spring, depending on the root quality of the plant.
Plant boxwood in late summer if possible
Basically, boxwood should be planted in late summer. At this point it is still sufficiently warm so that the plant can root in time for winter. In addition, shoot growth in September is only minimal, which makes it easier for the box to grow roots - after all, it no longer has to invest energy in the growth of the above-ground parts (which would no longer mature in time before the first cold snap anyway). This in turn reduces the stress on the plant caused by planting and ensures that any resulting damage is kept as low as possible. In the following spring, the newly planted box finally develops fresh shoots.
Box gets yellow leaves after planting
A typical damage that can occur after planting is yellowing of the leaves. This happens when the roots that have been stressed or even damaged by planting can no longer supply the above-ground parts of the plant with sufficient water and nutrients. However, the phenomenon can be avoided with good preparation:
- Plant in late summer if possible
- Planting is also possible in winter, but only in frost-free weather
- choose a dry, not too hot day with an overcast sky
- do not plant on hot and sunny days
- Avoid damage to the roots: do not tear off, do not squeeze
- Cutting back the box after planting
- water regularly for the first three weeks after planting
Ideal timing depends on root quality
When you can actually plant your boxwood depends on the existing root ball:
- Potted / container goods: Planting time all year round, provided there is no frost or drought
- Bale goods: Planting time between October and May
- Bare root goods: Planting time in autumn (October / November) or spring (February to April)
Tip
Do not plant boxwood during the flowering period in April.
