Unfortunately, due to increasing development and the resulting deforestation of trees, birds are finding fewer and fewer places to retreat to raise their brood. A nesting box allows the animals to breed in close proximity to people. Do you still have a few old flower pots left over? Perfect, then build your own nesting box. You can find out how to do this on this page.
How to make a nesting box from a flower pot?
To build a nesting box from a flower pot, you will need a clay pot, two wooden washers, a threaded rod, nuts, a dowel and a drill. Attach the dowel and the threaded rod to the wooden discs, drill the entry hole and put the parts together.
Construction instructions
Required materials
- a clay pot
- two wooden discs with the diameters of the clay pot opening and its bottom
- a threaded rod that is slightly longer than the pot
- three nuts
- a dowel
- and a drill
Step-by-step instructions
- In the small disc, attach the dowel for hanging on the wall
- Attach the threaded rod to the small washer with two nuts about one centimeter away from the edge
- Drill a hole for the threaded rod on the large disc too
- Drill the entry hole on the other half of the wooden disc
- Now put all the parts together (the large wooden disc is also attached with a nut) and attach the flower pot nesting box to a wall
Tips and useful information
- Depending on how large you have chosen the entrance hole, different species of birds will nest in your self-made nesting box
- Do not hang the nesting box too low (minimum height 2 m) so that it remains out of reach for cats
- The interior of the flower pot can heat up quickly. Therefore, do not hang the nesting box in direct sunlight
- If you build several flowerpot nesting boxes, you must ensure there is sufficient distance when hanging them
- Cushion the inside of the flower pot with some soft straw
- Impregnate the wooden discs so that mold does not form when damp
- You can paint your flower pot nesting box colorfully before hanging it up
- A nesting box made from a clay pot attracts not only birds but also bumblebees
