Spruces are a genus of plants with several species. The Norway spruce is the only species native to Europe. Serbian spruce and blue spruce are also popular plants in the garden.
When and how often do spruce trees bloom?
The flowering period of spruces is between April and June and occurs at intervals of 4-7 years. Spruces only bloom when they are at least 10 years old, although their flowers are of separate sexes and young trees initially only bear female flowers.
Very few people think about the blossoms of the spruce tree; what is more important is its use as a Christmas tree. Often the flower is hardly noticeable, but sometimes you can see the pollen as a yellow “cloud” around the tree or under the spruce.
Then the tree is at least ten years old. That's how long it takes for a spruce to bloom; some even take up to 40 years. A young spruce initially only bears female flowers, which are arranged together in cones. The male flowers are significantly smaller, about one centimeter long.
When do spruce trees bloom?
Spruce trees usually only bloom about every four to seven years. The flowering period is between April and June. Some circumstances, such as a lack of water or nutrients, lead to a so-called anxiety bloom. A (persistent) period of severe frost can also lead to this. Here you should get to the bottom of the cause so that your spruce tree doesn't die.
