The indoor bamboo is very popular because its bushy green brings a Far Eastern atmosphere to every apartment. With appropriate care, the bamboo thrives, but the leaves occasionally turn brown.
Why is my indoor bamboo turning brown and what can I do about it?
If an indoor bamboo turns brown, it may be due to lack of water, damaged roots, or a natural fall process. To save the plant, cut off brown leaves at the bottom and ensure adequate water and nutrient supply.
Requirements for indoor bamboo to thrive
The indoor bamboo is not a true representative of its kind, but rather a bushy grass that looks similar to real bamboo. Among other things, it needs a lot of sun for good growth and is therefore a candidate for the windowsill or winter garden. However, care should always be taken to ensure that the plant does not receive any direct sun. Humidity is just as important as light. If you have a bright bathroom, this is the ideal location for an indoor bamboo.
Care
The bamboo doesn't place any great demands on the soil, normal potting soil is sufficient.
An indoor bamboo needs daily watering or always a saucer filled with water. Spraying the bamboo with water is a good way to maintain pleasant humidity. However, waterlogging should be avoided.
It is best to use stale or rainwater, as the lime content is low. Once a month, new nutrients should be added to the planting soil with a universal fertilizer (€10.00 on Amazon). In the winter months, less water is used, but the indoor bamboo must not dry out.
Brown coloring of indoor bamboo
Although the indoor bamboo is an evergreen plant, it happens that more or fewer leaves turn brown and eventually dry out. There are various reasons for this:
- some leaves change color and fall off in autumn, a natural process
- If the leaves turn pale, the reason is a lack of water, which can be remedied by abundant watering
- brown leaves also appear when the roots are damaged
- brown leaves in summer also indicate a lack of water
If the discoloration of the leaves is discovered in time, there is still time to save the plant. The pale or brown leaves are cut off at the ground and the bamboo sprouts again. However, if the destruction of the roots is too advanced, the plant will no longer recover and will eventually die.
