With its wonderful blue leaves, the blue eucalyptus has a very special charm. In order to maintain its great appearance, some - even if only a few - care measures are required. On this page you will find out everything about the cultivation of the Australian plant. This means the tree will give you joy for a long time.
How do you properly care for a blue eucalyptus?
Blue eucalyptus trees require a sunny location, moderate watering, a bi-weekly liquid fertilizer, regular pruning and possibly repotting into a larger container. In winter they are hardy down to -20°C. Preventive pest control complements the care.
Selection of location
The eucalyptus has no demands when it comes to temperature. It grows in both warm and cold places. Adequate lighting is much more important. If the blue eucalyptus gets too little light, its impressive leaves fade. In summer it is best to put the tree outside in a full sunny place. But the blue eucalyptus can also be cultivated as a year-round houseplant.
Watering behavior
If you forget to water the blue eucalyptus, it won't matter at all. The tree copes well with drought. However, it cannot tolerate waterlogging at all. Always wait until the top layer of substrate has dried before watering again.
Fertilizer application
During the growth phase from spring to autumn, fertilizing twice a week with conventional liquid fertilizer promotes growth.
Cutting
Whether in the garden or as a houseplant, the blue eucalyptus needs to be cut several times a year due to its rapid growth. Otherwise it quickly reaches heights of over 5 meters. You can prune a houseplant all year round. Pruning outside is best done in spring. Treat the incision sites with a wound protection product (€10.00 on Amazon).
Wintering
The blue eucalyptus is the only variety that can overwinter outside. It can withstand temperatures down to -20°C.
Repotting
Once, or twice a year if it grows quickly, it is time to plant the blue eucalyptus in a larger container. You realize the need when the roots come to the surface.
Avoid pest infestations
The best help against a pest infestation is prevention. Therefore, check branches and leaves regularly for any abnormalities.
