Does your cat grass in your apartment regularly die or do the long stalks not look good with the rest of your houseplants? That's why your cat doesn't have to go without his beloved cat grass. On this page you can read how you can easily cultivate the plant on the balcony.
Can I plant cat grass on the balcony?
Cat grass can be easily cultivated on the balcony. Make sure you have a bright location without direct sunlight and protection from precipitation. A flat plant bowl, garden soil and regular watering are sufficient for care.
Site conditions
- Bright, but not in the blazing sun
- Protected from precipitation
Cat grass needs light, but it must not be left in the blazing sun, otherwise the stalks will burn quickly. If you water the plant regularly, no additional rain should soften the substrate.
Planting cat grass for the balcony
Cat grass is available in stores in a bowl. For a more attractive look, we recommend moving the plant.
Material
- A shallow plant bowl
- An additional coaster
- Gravel or clay balls so that the water can drain away
- Garden soil, definitely not enriched with nutrients
- Cat grass
- Sufficient water
Plants
- Create a drainage layer by covering the bottom of the bowl with gravel or clay beads.
- Now pour the earth over it.
- Put the cat grass on it.
- Water the plant well.
Tip
If you choose a sufficiently large bowl (from 40 cm in diameter), your cat can lie on the cat grass straight away. However, you should buy soft cat grass and cut it regularly to prevent the blades from becoming sharp.
Care
Cat grass has a high water requirement. It also needs to be cut back regularly for three reasons:
- Pruning promotes new shoots.
- Otherwise the grass will start to bloom and turn brown at the ends. In this condition it is inedible.
- Over time, the stalks become sharp-edged and lead to cuts on the mouth.
In winter you have to bring the grass into the house. No additional fertilizer is required. Cat grass has the ability to absorb nutrients. Your cat could therefore ingest too many minerals. This also applies to substances in the air. Therefore, only put your cat grass on the balcony if you do not use it for smoking.
