It happens again and again that conifers have to be transplanted in the garden. Either they are in the wrong location and do not thrive, or their regular space suddenly becomes too small. Maybe the garden should be designed completely differently. Such a transplanting operation is usually unproblematic if you proceed carefully and cautiously.
How to transplant conifers successfully?
Conifers can be transplanted in August and September. Choose a sunny and not too dry location, dig a large planting hole, mix the soil with nutrient-rich potting soil, carefully dig up the conifers and plant them. Water regularly after transplanting and avoid pruning.
When are conifers transplanted?
Replanting campaigns should, if possible, take place when the plant has already gone into hibernation. This applies to solitary plants as well as entire conifer hedges. It doesn't matter what type of conifer it is. The suitable months are August and September. It can also be transplanted a little later, but there should be no night frosts yet.
The procedure for transplanting
First we look for a new, suitable location, sunny and not too dry.
- First remove the weeds and any roots in the ground.
- Dig a sufficiently large planting hole, preferably twice the size of the root ball.
- Mix the soil from the planting holes with a good portion of fresh, nutrient-rich potting soil.
- Once the holes are prepared, you can start digging up the conifers. Do this carefully and keep enough distance from the trunk to injure as few roots as possible.
- Prick vertically with the spade and dig as deep as possible.
- Surely you won't be able to carry the dug up plant with the large root ball. Therefore, prepare a hand truck (€49.00 on Amazon) or a film with which you can pull the plant to its new location.
- Insert the plant.
- Fill the planting hole with soil and add a portion of fertilizer around the conifer.
- Water the plant thoroughly. Keep watering in the next few weeks so that the plant can grow well.
More tips for transplanting
After a transplant, the conifers are initially exhausted. They may look a little tired for a day or two. Therefore, water regularly. Do not prune in the near future. If they were transplanted in the fall, they should only be cut in the spring, but only moderately. Large cuts would only cause unnecessary damage to the plant, which is currently in the process of rebuilding.
