A blue diamond blooms beautifully. Several blue diamonds bloom even more beautifully, or at least more numerously. If there is free space in the garden, you can easily propagate Russian lavender yourself. Without much effort, cost and without professional skill.
How can you successfully propagate blue rue?
The blue rue can be propagated by three methods: division of the plant after the ice saints or in autumn, propagation by cuttings in spring, and sowing seeds, although germination takes several months and is less effective.
Three possible methods
All varieties of blue rue make it easy for us to obtain tens of specimens from a single plant. A large bee pasture can be created in the garden in no time. We can even choose which method we use to propagate them:
- Division of the plant
- Propagation by cuttings
- Sowing seeds
Division of the plant
Over the years, the subshrub increases in size. For propagation, the blue rue can simply be divided into two parts. Both parts develop into independent plants that are genetically identical.
- share after the Ice Saints (mid-May)
- alternatively in autumn after the end of the flowering season
- only share he althy and large blue diamonds
- Cutting the root ball with a spade
- or dig it up and cut it with a knife
- remove dead shoots and roots
- plant in a new location and water well
Tip
Some specimens form root runners on their own. Sever the connection to the mother plant and plant the young blue diamond in a new place. This is how you get blue diamond offspring almost effortlessly.
Propagation by cuttings
In the spring after the Ice Saints, the blue diamond is radically cut back. This produces a lot of he althy plant material for propagation. Here the steps are explained using a cutting:
- Choose a strong annual shoot. The interface should be slightly woody and there must still be at least two leaf buds on the shoot.
- Remove all leaves that are close to the cut site and also any flower remains.
- Slightly scrape off the bark above the cut point with the knife.
- Choose a sheltered spot in the garden. It should be bright, but without direct sunlight.
- Place the cutting in moistened garden soil.
Note:You can also plant the cuttings (€6.00 on Amazon) in potting soil and place the pots on the windowsill. The success rate is higher here because, unlike outdoors, constant conditions can be offered throughout.
Sowing seeds
Getting the seeds of the blue rue to germinate is complicated and takes several months:
- Place seeds in constantly moist sand at 20 °C for 2-4 weeks
- then cover with foil and put in the fridge for 4-6 weeks
- then sow in potting soil and grow at 5 to 12 °C
The blue diamonds grown from seeds take about six years until they bloom for the first time. Therefore, this propagation method is not a real alternative.
