We have known their “parents”, the raspberry and the blackberry, in the garden for ages. The Tayberry, however, is a comparatively young hybrid. As a result, it is still a blank slate for many hobby gardeners. The following information about optimal planting can give you a rich harvest.
How do I plant a tayberry correctly?
To plant a tayberry, choose a sunny location, prepare a deeply loosened planting hole, improve the soil with leaf humus (€149.00 at Amazon) and sand if necessary, water the root ball, plant the plant and water it well. Cutting and tying the shoots supports their growth.
The berry plant feels at home here
Before you reach for the spade, take time to find the tayberry's favorite spot. Where would this plant choose to root if it had free choice? Definitely in a place that offers you the following living conditions:
- Sun full, or at least partial shade
- lots of warmth
- Protection from cold and wind
The soil must be rich in humus and well-drained and must not dry out too much in summer. Fortunately, these demands on the soil, if they are not met at the location, can be met with a little effort before planting.
Tip
If you don't have your own garden, then cultivate the tayberry in a large container. You still can't avoid a sunny spot on the balcony, and more effort is required from you when it comes to care.
How to plant the Tayberry
Even though planting is theoretically possible on any frost-free day of the year. Look for a plant in fall or spring. Because these are the two seasons that are best for planting.
- After you have identified the ideal location, loosen the soil deeply and then dig a sufficiently large planting hole. It should be deeper than the root height of the young plant.
- If the excavation is clayey, i.e. not very permeable, improve it with leaf humus (€149.00 on Amazon) and sand.
- Water the tayberry root ball in a container with lukewarm water.
- Place the plant straight into the planting hole and bury it a little deeper than it was previously in the pot.
- Spread some compost around the plant and work it into the top layer of soil.
- Water the tayberry well.
Tip
If you plant several tayberries in a row, the planting distance between two specimens should be about 2 m. The ideal distance between two rows is 2.5 m.
Cut and tie after planting
The tayberry needs a scaffold to keep its tendrils from bending to the ground. At the same time, the “thicket” is untangled by tying it up. To ensure that the tayberry doesn't get in the way when setting up the scaffolding, you should ideally plan and set it up before planting. Right from the start, their shoots are spread out in a fan shape and tied to them.
In the year of planting, the plant is trained with around seven shoots. Cut away the remaining rods.
