We know the above-ground part of the plane tree too well and like to often seek shade under its sprawling crown. But this strong tree can only thrive so magnificently because it is supported and nourished by an “invisible” root system. Let's take a closer look.
What is the root system of a plane tree like?
The plane tree's root system is adaptable as a heart root and combines both shallow and deep roots. The extensive roots can absorb water in deep soil layers and thus enable the tree to tolerate drought well.

We often talk about plants with a long taproot that reaches deep into the ground. In contrast, there are plants that spread their roots flat just below the surface of the earth. Both root systems have their advantages and disadvantages.
The plane tree combines both types of roots, while remaining flexible in order to adapt as best as possible to the soil found. A nutrient-rich surface promotes the formation of numerous shallow roots, while a loose soil promotes deep roots that anchor the tree in a storm-proof manner. Plants with such a root system are called heartroots.
Drought tolerant thanks to root system
Plane trees easily reach an average age of up to 200 years, some specimens even more. During this long lifespan, dry periods can become challenging. Unlike trees with shallow roots, they usually cope with this time without any problems. Because while the top layers of the earth lose their moisture as heat and drought increase, the deep roots can still absorb water from the depths.
Size of the root system
The roots of the plane tree are hidden from our eyes. So hardly anyone has an accurate idea of how huge it actually is.

When planting a plane tree in the garden, consider the subsequent spread of the roots. Other trees and buildings must be at a safe distance to avoid damage from root pressure.
Is transplanting possible?
If a plane tree has to leave its current location, the question arises as to whether the root system can handle it. Yes, the plane tree can be transplanted. But it should be borne in mind that this is a fast-growing tree variety. What may work well when you are young can become a logistical challenge as your life progresses. Then the risk of roots being injured when digging out increases.
