How do you build a garden wall out of sand-lime brick?

You can build a garden wall made of sand-lime brick by first digging a suitable foundation and pouring concrete. Then you water the sand-lime bricks, stretch a guide line and build the bricks completely, i.e. H. every joint between the stones is filled with mortar. In the second row, the stones are each offset by half a length.

What is sand-lime brick?

Sand-lime brick is made from quicklime and quartz sand. Both materials are mixed in a ratio of 1:12 and mixed with water. This causes a chemical reaction that allows the mortar to be used to form stones. These are hardened under pressure at temperatures of up to 200 degrees.

The Foundation

A foundation provides the stable basis for the sand-lime brick wall because it ensures that no water can rise from the subsoil into the wall. The excavation required for this should be at least 80 centimeters deep and provided with formwork.

A layer of gravel or gravel is poured into the pit and compacted well. Finally, fill the concrete evenly and compact it too. After drying, you can apply an additional bitumen membrane.

When building walls, proceed as follows:

  • Tighten the guide line.
  • Mix the mortar according to instructions and apply a two to three centimeter thick layer.
  • Place the first and last stone on the wall and align using a spirit level and a long staff.
  • Follow the guidelines and use all sand-lime bricks.
  • Make sure to work with full joints, that is, every joint between the stones is filled with mortar.
  • In the second row, the stones are each offset by half a length.

Tip

Before building the wall, you should find out the official regulations regarding the permitted height, location and material. You can obtain information about this from the municipality, where you can also submit a building application if necessary.
