In practice, it sometimes turns out that a mowing line cuts better and cleaner on stone edges. Instead of replacing the device, simply convert your brush cutter from blade to line technology. To convert your grass trimmer from a blade to a line technology, first remove the blade unit, then insert the appropriate line dispenser and finally mount a ground angle as a line cutter on the edge of the mowing head.
Material, tools and preparatory work
Manufacturers of grass trimmers usually offer their models in both versions. Except for the cutting technology, these devices are the same. This has the advantage that you can replace the cutter head with a thread dispenser without having to worry about compatibility. The following materials and tools are required:
- Thread dispenser including spool and mowing line
- 1 angle with 25 mm leg length, 13 mm width and 2 mm thickness
- grinder stand
- 2 Torx lens screws, screwdriver
The angle fulfills the function of a knife to shorten a mowing line that is too long while the engine is running. For this purpose, the angle is given the necessary grinding on the bench grinder. This measure is recommended to protect the plastic cover on the mowing head from excessive wear because a thread that is too long hits it.
Convert lawn trimmer – instructions
In order for the knife disc to be replaced with a thread dispenser, both components must have the same holder. Some manufacturers use square sockets, while other manufacturers use round sockets. For this reason, a thread dispenser from a third-party manufacturer is not compatible even if all dimensions otherwise fit.
You can remove the knife unit or lever it out of the anchoring with the screwdriver. This step requires the greatest effort when converting the grass trimmer. Then insert the new thread dispenser precisely onto the square or round metal bracket in the center.
Finally, take the ground angle and screw it to the edge of the mower head. If the mowing line is pulled a little too far out of the spool, the self-made knife cuts off the excess length on the first revolution. In this way, the cutting line only trims the lawn and spares the protective cover.
Tip
Changing the thread on the grass trimmer is not a difficult undertaking. If you soak the new mowing line in water for a day, it can be wound more flexibly. Pay particular attention to the correct winding direction, which is indicated by an arrow on the spool.
