First of all: A mole must not be killed. The use of gases is therefore only possible to a limited extent. If you have a mole on your property and want to get rid of it, you can find out here how and when you can use gassing and what animal-friendly alternatives are available.
How to get rid of moles without gassing?
Gasifying moles is not a recommended or permitted method as they are protected. Instead of trying gassing, you can get rid of moles with smells like garlic and essential oils or sounds like homemade wind turbines.
Benefits and protection from moles
The mole is protected – and not without reason. Although the European mole is not threatened with extinction, it is still at great risk from humans. In addition, the mole is not a pest, but rather a beneficial insect for the garden:
- It ensures good aeration of the soil and mixing of the earth layers.
- The mole destroys pests such as grubs, caterpillars and other insects that harm your fruit and vegetables.
- Moles do not eat roots and therefore do not harm your plants. If your plants die, you're not dealing with a mole but a vole.
Gas a mole
The only non-banned substance for gassing moles is carbide gas. These are stone-like substances that emit foul-smelling gases when they come into contact with water. The big disadvantage: These gases are highly flammable, fiery and highly toxic. We therefore advise against this method! Storing carbide alone is a challenge, as even high humidity leads to a reaction and gas formation. In addition, the operation is usually not crowned with success.
Excursus
Gas a mole with exhaust fumes
A farmer near Ingolstadt piped exhaust fumes from his tractor underground to put an end to a mole infestation. He was reported and faces a fine of up to €50,000.
Alternatives to get rid of a mole
