Scented nettles are almost magnetic for butterflies and bees. For people, however, it is less the nectar that impresses them, but rather the scent and appearance of this plant. Are there plants that suit her and which ones are they?
Which plants can you combine scented nettles with?
Scented nettles can be combined well with plants that have similar location requirements and harmonize visually. Suitable companion plants include dahlias, candlesticks, ornamental grasses, yellow coneflowers, phlox, goldenrod, globe thistle and purple sedum.
What factors should you consider when combining scented nettles?
The combination of scented nettle should be well thought out. Before you get started, make sure the companion plants fit the following factors:
- Flower color: white, pink, violet or blue
- Flowering time: June to October
- Location requirements: sunny, well-drained and nutrient-rich soil
- Growth height: 80 to 100 cm
Scented nettles reach a height of up to 1 m during their flowering period. Clever combinations take this into account. It is therefore best to combine scented nettle with plants that grow to a similar size.
The scented nettle prefers to thrive in a warm, sunny location. The soil should not be too moist, but rather dry. Suitable planting partners prefer a similar location and soil.
Thanks to the extended flowering period and the wide range of different colored varieties, you can quickly find plants that bloom at the same time as the scented nettle and at the same time harmonize with it visually.
Combine scented nettle in the bed or in the bucket
Do you want an overall picture that captures attention? Then combine the scented nettle with yellow-flowering perennials. It will be quieter and yet exciting if you combine red or white perennials with scented nettles. Combinations with plants whose flowers differ from those of the scented nettle are also recommended. The elongated, narrow flower spikes appear impressively next to rounded flower bowls or flower balls.
The most outstanding companion plants for scented nettle include:
- Dahlias
- Magnificent candle
- Ornamental grasses such as switchgrass, silver eargrass and pennisetum
- Yellow Coneflower
- Phlox
- Goldenrod
- Ball Thistle
- Purple Stonecrop
Combine scented nettle with ball dahlia
Orange ball dahlias create a fantastic composition with violet to blue scented nettles. This eye-catcher is second to none. Place the two plants at approximately the same height in the bed as they reach a similar height.
Combine scented nettle with globe thistle
The globe thistle goes well with the scented nettle because it has similar location requirements and creates a wonderful contrast. The contrast is not between the flower colors, but between the flower shapes. Overall, this combination looks balanced and even more beautiful when graceful ornamental grasses stretch towards the sun in the background.
Combine scented nettle with yellow coneflower
The yellow coneflower also likes to stand in full sun and shines even more in the presence of the scented nettle, as the dark violet highlights the yellow of its flowers. Ideally, you should plant Rutbeckia in small groups, slightly offset from several scented nettles.
Combine scented nettle as a bouquet in the vase
The scented nettle looks great in a bouquet and enriches arrangements with globe thistles, candles and other autumn bloomers. A few blades of pennisetum grass in between bring dynamism and lightness. For a lovely bouquet of flowers, combine violet scented nettles with white candles. It looks happier and more lively when the yellow coneflower comes into play with the scented nettles.
