Aronia grows naturally as a shrub. This means that it is already clear: its branches will never climb to great heights. But does it remain so comfortably low that an outstretched hand can reach all of its fruits? There are differences typical of the variety, but they are not significant.

Aronia bushes reach a height of between 90 cm and 4 meters, depending on the variety. Smaller varieties such as Hugin are well suited to balcony cultivation, while Titan and Likornaja can grow over 2 meters high and require more space.
How tall can Aronia grow?
Four meters is the height limit that every aronia, also known as chokeberry, has to adhere to. But there are only a few varieties that actually reach this height. Many new varieties remain well below this height and are often no more than 2 m when fully grown. The lower height is intentional so that the harvest can be achieved without a ladder. Regarding width, similar values can usually be assumed.

How quickly does Aronia reach its maximum possible height?
That depends on how suitable your location and soil are. Generous fertilizing stimulates growth, but can result in Aronia not blooming. In general, it can be said that Aronia plants are fully grown after aboutfive to six years.
Can the height be limited by cutting?
In principle yes But this makes cutting an annual task, which is not necessary with the aronia. She gets a good build-up cut at a young age and is then left alone. Only damaged and dead branches are removed promptly. It is therefore better to plant a variety that is suitable in height straight away. If an aronia does need to be cut, it should be done immediately after flowering. Because immediately afterwards she lays the flower buds for the following year.

Choose a small variety for the balcony
Aronia can be easily cultivated in a pot on a sunny balcony. But for this project, be sure to choose a small-growing variety like the compact Hugin. She is bothered by the limited space in the pot and the limiting balcony ceiling.
