Is dried hogweed poisonous?
Giant hogweed, also known as Hercules, contains the toxin furocoumarins even after drying. This should neither get on the skin nor be consumed in large quantities. Since furocoumarins are stable and do not decompose through storage, giant hogweed is poisonous even when dried.
Why is the poison in giant hogweed so dangerous?

Meadow hogweed, also called common hogweed, can also be enjoyed dried. Before flowering, the stems of the leaves are harvested and tied into small bouquets. If you have very sensitive and allergy-prone skin, you should wear gloves when harvesting. Hang the bouquets upside down in a protected location to dry. If the stems have turned yellow, a sweet, edible substance has formed.
How can I use dried hogweed?
You can also collect theleaves including the stems of young meadow hogweed. Dry the leaves, also tied into bouquets. In winter you can use it to brew a soothing cough tea.

There are different types of meadow hogweed. Only common hogweed can also be used as a medicinal plant. The native pink hogweed and giant hogweed are poisonous and must not be used. Only collect the plants if you are absolutely sure.
