Giving green liveliness to corners of rooms with little light is the job of foliage plants. For their robe of shapely, shiny green to decoratively patterned leaves, sun rays are no longer important. These 5 houseplants transform dimly lit niches into a green refuge.

Cobbler palm – shade tolerant and easy to care for
There is a good reason why the cobbler palm tops the ranking of ideal houseplants for low-light locations. The stemless asparagus plant with the botanical name Aspidistra elatior impresses with dark green, shiny leaves. With a length of 45-55 cm, the dense tuft of leaves and a growth height of 70 cm conjure up a magical jungle atmosphere in living spaces. In addition, the cobbler palm is unbeatably easy to care for and forgives almost every beginner's mistake.
Striped ferns – mystical ambassadors of primeval earth history
Representing the numerous fern species for cultivation in living spaces, striped ferns (Asplenium) have conquered a place in this selection. There are several subspecies that show off in the low-light location:
- Nest fern (Asplenium nidus), whose undivided, light green fronds form a funnel up to 100 cm high
- Fine-feathered striped fern (Asplenium daucifolium) delights with 50 cm long and 20 cm wide feathery leaves
- Mother fern (Asplenium bulbiferum), a rarity with triple-divided, light green fronds on gray stems
There are a total of more than 700 striped ferns, of which only these 3 subspecies have emerged as easy-care houseplants for shady niches.
Dieffenbachia – poisonous beauty with a sublime silhouette
Their more than 50 species are confusingly similar, as they all boast breathtaking decorative leaves. Colors from creamy white to bright green dominate here, arranged as if by the hand of a painter. With a growth height of 80 to 100 cm, the decorative foliage plants cannot be overlooked in low-light corners of the room. Unfortunately, due to their high toxic content, Dieffenbachia are not suitable for family households.
Limse – delicate grass for the north window
Ornamental grasses are a familiar sight in sunny beds. Only a few hobby gardeners are aware that the distinctive cornice (Scirpus) is perfect for greening living spaces. The delicate grasses form a dense tuft over which cream-colored spikes can rise at any time of the year. Since the stalks, which can be up to 35 cm long, tend elegantly to the ground over time, cultivation in a hanging basket is ideal.
Glücksfeder – for green moments of happiness in places with little light
Their graceful shape and dark green, succulent leaves make the Lucky Feather one of the most popular houseplants for beginners and advanced growers. The arum plant Zamioculcas zamiifolia grows upright between 30 and 90 cm high, is undemanding and shade-tolerant. Only the toxic content is likely to affect the list's positive properties somewhat.
Tip
Where the sun's rays reach a location in the living room, at least in the morning or early evening, the exotic pubic flower (Aeschynanthus) blooms in bright red. The gesneria plant thrives with 100-120 cm long tendrils on which red sepals grow from June to October gather into long tubes. This makes the Asian beauty perfect for hanging baskets.
