Quinces are increasingly finding their way into home gardens. Specialist retailers offer a number of different varieties for planting. These are refined breeds. Alternatively, you can grow your own trees using cuttings.
How do you propagate quince trees?
To propagate a quince, cut young, woody shoots to 20-30 cm long in late autumn or winter and place them vertically in flower pots with loose soil. The roots develop in winter. In spring, move the plants to a sunny garden location.
Advantages of professional breeding
Quinces cannot be propagated from seeds. Experts refine quinces into apple or pear varieties. The advantage of these varieties is their excellent resistance to diseases and climatic conditions. In this way, various quince varieties spread to northern Germany.
Propagate quinces yourself
Similar to grapes, elder bushes or currants, quinces can be propagated using cuttings. This variant proves to be very effective and particularly simple.
Preparation
In late autumn or winter, young shoots are removed from the quince tree. Use a very sharp and cleaned cutting tool for this purpose.

- pencilstrong
- approx. 20 to 30 centimeters
So that the shoot grows upwards next spring, mark it before planting. Cut the lower end at a slight angle. In contrast, the top end receives a straight cut. In the next step, these shoots are placed in flower pots with loose soil.
Make sure it is in a vertical position. In addition, at least a third of the shoot should be in the ground. The roots develop during the winter. Plant the young plants in a sunny location in the garden in spring.
A cool and bright place is recommended during the winter. The frost-protected greenhouse or hallway is ideal. Alternatively, keep the cut shoots cool and dark. As soon as spring beckons with its rays of sunshine, they can be put directly into the garden.
