The non-toxic borage, dosed in moderation, is less suitable for small herb beds. But where is a suitable location and what characteristics should it have?
Which location is suitable for borage?
The ideal location for borage should be full sun to partial sun, warm and moist, with slightly sandy, humus-rich, nutrient-rich and calcareous soil. Avoid shady areas and window boxes as borage overgrows other herbs and forms a deep taproot.
Awaken feelings at home
The location should be based on the homeland of borage. This spice plant originally comes from the Mediterranean region, where it sows itself using its seeds. For this reason, borage needs and loves warmth. It can cope well with short dry periods.
Borage – a sun worshiper who loves moisture
Borage likes to overgrow other herbs and therefore needs a spacious, full sun to shaded location. He feels uncomfortable in the shadows. The underlying substrate should be slightly sandy and also have the following properties:
- humos
- nutrient-rich
- moist
- calcareous
Tips & Tricks
Do not plant borage in a balcony box. Since it forms a deep taproot, this is not a suitable location for it.
