Relaxing in a deckchair on the balcony in summer can turn into a holiday feeling in a class of its own when ferns decorate the balcony. You feel like you're in a jungle, except that the constant sweating isn't happening thanks to the lofty altitude. But are ferns actually suitable for balconies?
Which ferns can you plant on the balcony?
Ferns suitable for balconies are smaller varieties such as spotted fern, maidenhair fern, script fern and deer's tongue fern. They prefer semi-shady to shady places and should be in areas protected from the wind. Make sure the soil is loose and water regularly with lukewarm water.
Specimens suitable for the balcony
Whether as a privacy screen or a decorative element (especially in late autumn and winter) - wintergreen and evergreen fern species are particularly popular for balconies. It is better to choose smaller varieties (max. 60 cm high). A tree fern is not suitable for the balcony. However, the following are suitable:
- Spotted Fern
- maidenhair fern
- font fern
- Deertongue Fern
South-facing balconies are completely unsuitable
Most fern species are not designed for south-facing balconies that are hot in summer. They prefer to be in a semi-shady to shady place. North-facing balconies are therefore well suited. But east and west balconies can also be equipped with ferns. The exception is the striped fern. He likes it sunny and dry.
It shouldn't be too drafty
Many balconies are at the mercy of the wind. Ferns don't like that. Therefore they should not be on the parapet. It is better to plant them in a pot and place them on the sheltered wall of the house.
Which soil should be used when planting?
The bucket should have a diameter of between 30 and 40 cm and be deep. Plant your fern in loose soil. Other beneficial features of the earth include:
- high humus content
- medium nutrient content
- easy to keep fresh to moist
- acidic pH (especially for rib fern)
Caring for the fern on the balcony
Fern on the balcony needs to be watered regularly. Stale tap water or rainwater is used for this. It should be lukewarm when watering. It is also helpful if the fern is sprayed with a mist of water every now and then.
Ferns in pots should also be supplied with fertilizer every 2 to 4 weeks during their growing season. Whether liquid fertilizer or long-term fertilizer in stick form - this choice is up to you.

While the fronds are forming, the fern should not be subjected to any change in location. The pot should not be rotated either.
