The pink, purple or white flowers looked too beautiful. But now they have dried up and are hanging limply. What now? Can you continue to cultivate the cyclamen?
What to do when the cyclamen has faded?
When a cyclamen has finished flowering, it should be placed in a cool location, watered regularly and fertilized during the flowering period. After flowering, the plant can be planted outdoors, fruits and seeds collected and used for propagation.
When cyclamen usually blooms
Between February and March the fun is over for most cyclamens. Then they face the end of their heyday. On the other hand, cyclamens that are grown outdoors only bloom in February, when the weather becomes milder, and can bloom until April. But by May at the latest, all the cyclamen have bloomed.
Flowered too early? That's what's behind it
If you have your cyclamen in a pot in a cozy, warm place in your apartment, you shouldn't be surprised if the flowers withdraw early. The cyclamen does not like temperatures above 16 °C. Therefore, it should be placed in a cool location during its flowering period.
Don't throw away after flowering, plant out instead
After the flowers have died, the cyclamen uses its last strength to produce its fruits and seeds. At this time it doesn't look very attractive. Therefore, many people dispose of their cyclamen in the pot after the flowering period. But if you have a garden, you should plant this plant instead of throwing it away. After the summer it is brought back in and blooms again.
Finding a suitable location outside
In the open field, the cyclamen needs a shady or semi-shady location. A location under a tree that provides shade in the hot summer is ideal. The soil in place should have the following properties and should only be watered sparingly:
- permeable
- easy
- moderately nutritious
- humos
- neutral to alkaline
Propagate cyclamen after flowering
After you have plucked out the old petals, you can wait until the fruits and seeds have formed. The cyclamen can be easily propagated with them. After flowering, it is also a good time to divide the tuber.
Tips & Tricks
Even if watering is neglected and the soil lacks nutrients, flowering will be shortened or not occur at all. Therefore: Water your cyclamen abundantly and fertilize it regularly shortly before and during flowering!
