If you have a lot of space, you can also plant the plane tree in your home garden. Alternatively, the tree that tolerates pruning can be brought into the desired shape using pruning shears. The tree is definitely attractive and easy to care for.
How to plant a plane tree in the garden?
Plane trees are attractive and easy to care for in large gardens; they prefer sunny locations and loamy or sandy soil. A fully grown plane tree reaches heights of up to 30 meters and requires sufficient space for roots and crown. Choose special varieties like “Alphens Globe” for smaller gardens.
Location and the space factor
The plane tree likes sunny places, but would also be content with partial shade. It has no special demands on the soil. It can be loamy or sandy, slightly acidic or slightly alkaline. Most plane tree species grow very tall. A crown width of up to 25 m and a height of 30 m are not uncommon among plane trees.
The location you choose should therefore be far away from walls and other large trees. Also take into account that the root system develops even wider than the crown.
Tip
The “Alphens Globe” ball plane tree is well suited for smaller gardens. Their growth is rapid at 20-30 cm per year, but in the end it remains at a maximum height of around 5 m.
Young tree and planting
Plane trees can be easily propagated with cuttings. Seed propagation takes longer and only works in exceptional cases with hybrid varieties. It's easier to buy from a construction school. A hefty price is charged for larger specimens, but they have received the first topiary. This makes further cutting measures easier for laypeople.
The following points are important for planting:
- plant in warm spring
- Loosen the soil well and mix with compost
- create a drainage layer of gravel
- Tie tree to support post
- water well in the first few weeks
Design shapes
Right from the start of planting, you should decide what shape you want the crown of the plane tree to have. The foundation for this is laid with the first cut. The plane tree can be formed into a standard tree or into the popular roof plane tree.
Necessary care
Once the tree has grown well, there is no further care waiting for you apart from cutting. Only in very dry summers should the tree get water from the garden hose.
