What are the special features of the Creeping Günsel?
The creeping gunsel is characterized by its pain and bleeding properties and contains the glycoside harpagoside, which is otherwise only found in devil's claw. It is used both as a medicinal plant and for culinary purposes and is a popular greenery plant in gardens.

In earlier times, botanists referred to Creeping Günsel as “Consolida media”, a name that comes from the herb’s traditional use as a medicinal plant to promote wound healing. The Latin word “consolidare” means something like “to contract” and refers to the pain and bleeding properties of the creeping gunsel.
Ingredients similar to devil's claw
In addition to essential oils, tannic acids, glycosides and other ingredients, creeping Günsel contains the glycoside harpagoside. This substance is otherwise only found in devil's claw, an herb that is traditionally used against osteoarthritis and rheumatism. Creeping Günsel probably also has similar pain-relieving effects for problems in the joints and back.
Special position within the Günsel
But its ingredients are not the only special thing about Creeping Günsel. Within the Günsel family, Ajuga reptans is pretty much the only representative that can be used both as a medicinal plant and in the kitchen. Between May and June you can collect the leaves, shoots and flowers of the creeping wildflower and use them either fresh or dried in salads, soups, stews or casseroles. But be careful: Since the creeping Günsel tastes quite bitter (similar to chicory), you should only use it very sparingly. The milder tasting flowers also go very well with sweet dishes and fruit.

Another special feature of the creeping gunsel is its ability to quickly cover the ground with numerous runners. For this reason, the wild plant is often planted to quickly green up areas and under trees or hedges in gardens. Ajuga reptans is a very versatile herb!
