Montbretias are among the very flowering plants that enchant the garden with their bright flowers for weeks. If this floral splendor does not occur, various factors may be responsible.
Why aren't my Montbretias blooming?
If Montbretias do not bloom, this may be due to the wrong location, too young plants, moving the Montbretias, or pests. Patience and a site check can restore the blooms.
The wrong location
In order to reach full bloom, the Montbretias need a warm, sunny and protected location. However, if the flowering plant is too shady, it will produce very few or no flowers at all. If the Montbretias are slow to bloom, the first thing you should do is check the location.
If necessary, transplant the tuberous plants to another place. A bed in full sun near the house is ideal, where the wall stores heat during the day and radiates it at night.
Plants too young
Montbretia takes two to three years until they produce flowers in addition to the foliage. Even specimens purchased commercially may not bloom in the first year after planting because the Montbretias have to acclimatize first.
Montbretias grown from seeds take even longer to bloom. If the plants you have grown yourself are in the optimal location, you should not lose patience. The Montbretias need a few years until they are in full bloom.
Have you implemented the Montbretia?
Even after transplanting, the Montbretia sometimes zigzags a bit and doesn't bloom. Give the plants time to get used to the new location. Montbretias very often only bloom in the year following the year they are planted.
Maybe pests are to blame
If not only does the flower fail to bloom, but the Montbretia leaves only very sparsely, it could be that voles have developed a taste for the tubers. Montbretien tubers are a real treat for small rodents.
It makes a lot of sense to use the Montbretiia in special plant baskets (€34.00 on Amazon). This means that the voles cannot access the coveted food.
Tip
Install one or more circular plant supports well before flowering. This prevents the clumps from falling apart unsightly and the flowers from bending.
