Jasmine is a popular house and container plant because of its beautiful white flowers. It's even more annoying when the jasmine doesn't bloom. Why this could be and what you can do against flowering laziness.
Why isn't my jasmine blooming?
If the jasmine does not bloom, the causes may be too little light, a winter quarter that is too warm, pruning too hard or a plant that is too old. Make sure the jasmine gets enough sun, is kept cool in winter and is pruned carefully.
Cause of a lack of flowering
It is almost always care errors that lead to the jasmine flower failing. The most common causes are:
- too little light
- too warm winter quarters
- pruning too much
- too old plant
Jasmine needs a lot of light and sun
During spring and summer, jasmine needs a lot of light and warmth. A location in full sun suits the plant well. Only when you grow them in the flower window do you need to protect them from sunburn.
If you grow jasmine in a pot on the terrace or balcony, look for a location that is as sunny as possible. Only there does the climbing plant unfold its full splendor.
The temperatures in the winter quarters
No matter how warm the jasmine likes it during the flowering period, the temperatures should not be too high in winter. A maximum of 10 degrees is the ideal wintering temperature. If the plant is in a warmer place, it will not bloom.
Cut jasmine correctly
Jasmine should be trimmed regularly. You have to do this carefully. If you shorten it too much, remove the inflorescences, which develop primarily on the young shoots.
Cut the plant shortly before budding in spring. If possible, only remove old shoots. This will encourage the formation of new branches with lots of flowers.
Rejuvenate old plants
Sometimes the jasmine has bloomed profusely for several years. If it stops blooming, it is simply too old. To make the jasmine bloom again, you should rejuvenate it.
Cut it back to a third and remove all old shoots just above the base.
The jasmine needs one to two years to recover from this radical cut. During this time it blooms little or not at all.
Tip
It is normal for jasmine leaves to turn yellow before the winter break and eventually fall off. If the plant loses its leaves in summer, it needs more water or a larger pot.
