Like practically all plants, coleus also flowers. But the flowering of this plant is quite unspectacular and is not the reason why a flower lover would be interested in coleus, because the foliage is much more decorative.
When and how does coleus bloom?
The coleus (Solenostemon) blooms in summer, although the flowers are small and inconspicuous. Ornamental plants often have their flowers removed to direct energy into the decorative, colorful foliage. However, flower shoots can be used as cuttings for propagation.
Most coleus species bloom in summer. Since the coleus flowers are relatively small and inconspicuous, it is often recommended to remove them immediately. This means no energy goes into the “useless” flowers and the plant can develop more beautifully.
You can use the flower shoots as cuttings to propagate your coleus. The shoots should be around 10 cm long. Carefully pinch out the flower heads and place the cutting in a glass of water to root.
The most important things in brief:
- Flowers small and inconspicuous
- are usually removed
- Flower shoots can be used as cuttings
Tip
Feel free to remove the flower bases of your coleus. The adornment of this plant is its colorful foliage.
