Asters are sometimes considered THE garden flowers in the fall season. But is planting these pretty flowering perennials really safe or are they poisonous?
Are asters poisonous to people or pets?
Garden asters such as rough-leaf asters, cushion asters, smooth-leaf asters and mountain asters are unknown to humans and do not pose a danger to animals such as cats and rabbits. However, chrysanthemums, which also belong to the asters, are poisonous to pets and should be kept away.
Garden asters are non-toxic
The well-known garden asters such as rough-leaf asters, cushion asters, smooth-leaf asters and mountain asters are non-toxic to humans. These asters also pose no danger to animals such as cats and rabbits.
Here are some more tips:
- Flowers are decorative and edible, e.g. used to serve food
- Asters bloom from May to November
- the more intensely colored the flowers are, the more aromatic they are
- the leaves are also edible
Chrysanthemums are also often referred to as asters. That's correct, because they belong to the asters. However, they are poisonous to pets. So keep them away from pets and children!
Tip
Asters that have only recently been purchased should not be eaten as they are often still contaminated with pesticides and fungicides.
