Hanging tomatoes are ideal for growing in pots, especially in hanging baskets or in flower boxes on the balcony. These are usually branched bush tomatoes that can be grown without a pole and at some point the shoots will hang due to their own weight. We will introduce you to some suitable varieties in this article.
Which hanging tomato varieties are suitable for growing in hanging baskets and containers?
Some recommended hanging tomato varieties are Pendulina, Hoffmanns Rentita, Black Cherry, Yellow Grape, Gold Nugget, Tumbling Tom Yellow, Tumbling Tom Red, Golden Currant, Indigo Berries, Matt's Wild Cherry, Primabelle, Red Currant, Black Zebra Cherry, Primagold and Balcony Star. These seed-resistant varieties are well suited for cultivation in hanging baskets, flower boxes and pots on the balcony.
Hybrid or seed-resistant?
In our overview of the best hanging tomato varieties, we have intentionally only included seed-resistant varieties, as experience has shown that these are much more aromatic than the common hybrid varieties. For a long time, hybrids were only bred for yield and fruit size, they also produce better yields than the seedless tomato varieties, but they don't taste nearly as good.
Cherry and bush tomatoes are best suited for pot cultivation
For pot cultivation, you should only choose cherry or bush tomatoes, although you should pay attention to the space available on your balcony for small cherry tomatoes: These often develop very long shoots of at least 250 centimeters. Bottle tomatoes and beefsteak tomatoes, on the other hand, are not suitable for cultivation in containers.
