If you want to plant a beech tree in the garden or create an entire hedge of beech trees, you need seedlings, i.e. young beech trees. You can grow seedlings yourself or buy them ready-made in stores. How to grow the seedlings yourself.
How do I get beech seedlings in the garden?
To obtain beech seedlings, you can either sow beech seeds, cut beech cuttings or buy finished seedlings from specialist retailers. The seeds need a cold period to germinate. The cuttings are cut in spring and planted until they sprout.
Grow your own beech seedlings
You can grow beech seedlings yourself. There are three different ways to do this:
- Sowing
- Cuttings
- Moosen
The prerequisite for self-cultivation is the presence of a mannable beech tree on which beechnuts grow, or a beech hedge from which you can cut cuttings.
Removing moss from beech seedlings is not that easy and is usually only practiced by experienced gardeners.
Sowing beech trees or propagating them through cuttings
If you grow beech trees from beech nuts, beech seedlings will initially emerge, which only consist of a small stem and two leaves. They are preferably cared for in pots until they have developed enough leaves and are planted out as seedling.
Attention: Beech seeds only germinate if they have gone through a longer cold phase. This overcomes the germination inhibition.
Cut cuttings from a beech tree that is not too old, in spring. The cuttings are placed in a pot or in the ground on site. It took a few months until the cuttings sprouted and could be cultivated as seedlings.
Buy beech seedlings at the nursery
If you're in a hurry or you can't get beech seeds or cuttings, buy beech seedlings from specialist retailers.
You can choose whether you want to buy a larger sapling for a single tree or smaller specimens for a hedge. The price for hedge plants is significantly lower than that for a single tree.
Beech seedlings are also offered online. Here the small trees are often quite inexpensive. However, you will not receive any detailed advice or compensation if the beech tree does not grow. If you contact a local specialist company, the price for a beech sapling that has not grown will almost always be refunded.
Tip
Basically, each sapling can be used to grow a beech tree as a single tree or many small beech trees for a beech hedge. The later size and spread depends solely on the pruning of the beech.
