The farmer's rose, as the peony is popularly known, can be found as a perennial in most gardens. The peonies genus includes more than 30 varieties, including some shrub peonies. These originally come from China.
How do I plant farmer's roses correctly?
To plant farmer's roses successfully, choose a sunny to semi-shady, wind-protected location with well-drained soil. Avoid container planting and plant in late summer or early fall. Provide young plants with sufficient water and frost protection.
The right floor
Ideally, the soil for peonies is slightly alkaline and calcareous, well-drained and not too nutrient-rich. But normal or slightly acidic garden soil is also suitable for the farmer's rose.
However, waterlogging should not form. If the soil is too firm, loosen it up a little with gravel (€15.00 on Amazon) or coarse sand. Your peony would like to be protected from the wind in a sunny to semi-shady place.
Is the peony suitable for planting in a container?
The peony forms taproots, which are up to 1.5 m long and require a lot of space. There is hardly enough space in a pot or planter; the peony could not develop properly there and will certainly not bloom in the pot. For planters, it is better to choose a different type of rose, such as a dwarf rose.
The best time to plant
It's best to plant country roses in late summer or early fall. Then the flowering period is over and so is the greatest heat. Before winter, the plants have enough time to root well; the autumn rain helps them with this. This saves you constant watering.
Planting in spring is also possible, perhaps you have time to redesign your garden or move. In this case, you should water your peonies adequately, especially during a long dry period. The same applies to transplanting older farmer's roses.
Caring for young plants
As long as your peony has not yet formed taproots, you should ensure there is sufficient water supply. Later it can also draw moisture from deeper layers of the earth. Young plants are not as hardy as older peonies and should therefore be protected from frost.
