The heat-loving bell vine is usually only cultivated as an annual climbing plant in our latitudes. With its dense foliage and large bell-shaped flowers, it is a very attractive plant that provides an opaque privacy screen in a very short time. Sometimes, however, the bell glories do not bloom at all. Then research into the causes is required.
Why isn't my bell vine blooming?
If your bell vine doesn't bloom, it could be because it was sown too late, in the wrong location with too little sun, or because dead parts are not removed regularly. Correct these factors to promote flower formation.
Sowing too late
In its natural home of Mexico, the bell vine thrives as a perennial, climbing subshrub. It often only blooms here in the second year.
If you sow bell glories yourself, you should not start growing them too late. Sowing should take place at the end of February at the latest so that the climbing plant produces flowers in the same year. By the time it is planted out in May, the bell vine will have already formed shoots that are approximately one meter long.
Wrong choice of location
The bell vine prefers full sun locations and humus-rich, nutrient-rich soils. If the sun worshiper is too shady, it will produce a lot of foliage, but the flowers will not be displayed. If this is the cause of the lazy flowering, it is recommended to plant the flowering climber in another location.
Withered flowers not cleaned up
So that the morning glory regularly produces new flowers, it is important to cut off everything that has bloomed at least once a week. If this is not done, the plant puts all its energy into producing seeds and hardly produces any flower buds.
You should only leave a few faded bells on the plant in late summer or early autumn and only if you want to harvest seeds yourself. After they have dried, these are carefully cut off and the seeds are picked out. Keep the large seeds cool and dry until sowing.
Tip
You can take cuttings from a particularly richly flowering bell vine in autumn. Placed in standard potting soil (€10.00 at Amazon), they quickly grow roots. Since the offspring continues to grow indoors throughout the winter, it will almost certainly produce many flowers.
