Roses – the “queen of flowers” and the symbol of romantic love – are extremely interesting plants, as they come in an almost inexhaustible variety of colors, shapes and sizes. If the location and care conditions are right, some types of roses can also be cultivated as houseplants.
Which roses are suitable as houseplants and how do you care for them?
Low-growing roses such as floribunda roses and special dwarf roses are suitable for indoor cultivation. Make sure you have a bright, airy location without direct midday sun and appropriate care, including regular watering, fertilizing and checking for pests.
Which types of roses are suitable for indoor cultivation?
Naturally, low-growing roses are particularly suitable for such a project. Shrub or even climbing roses can develop shoots up to four or five meters long and are therefore not suitable for keeping indoors due to their size. Many noble roses can also grow quite large and are therefore better off in a garden bed. However, most varieties of bed roses are suitable for pot cultivation, as they grow to a maximum height of 60 to 70 centimeters. There are now a large number of dwarf roses on the market that have been bred specifically for cultivation on the balcony or in the room.
Choosing a suitable location
No matter which rose you choose, all varieties have one thing in common: with regard to their location and care preferences, indoor roses want to be treated in the same way as their free-growing counterparts. In terms of location, this means that indoor roses also prefer a bright, airy place. However, roses do not like direct sunlight, especially the midday sun can cause problems for the sensitive plants during the hot summer months. A bright spot on a windowsill facing east or west would be ideal.
The right care for indoor roses
Like garden roses, indoor roses are not necessarily easy to care for, at least if you want to cultivate them for longer than just a few weeks or months. Many indoor roses only last for one flowering season and then have to be disposed of. Many providers grow special indoor roses, which are bred so quickly that they are exhausted and die after just a short time. However, you can try your luck at making the plant more durable through careful care. This includes:
- Provide roses with a fertilizer for flowering plants (€13.00 on Amazon) weekly during the flowering period.
- Water roses regularly, the root ball must not dry out.
- However, the substrate should not be too wet, because roses cannot tolerate waterlogging either
- Check the rose regularly for aphids and other pests.
- In autumn the rose is cut down to about five centimeters above the substrate.
- The plant must overwinter in a cool and bright place.
Tip
After blooming, you can also plant your potted rose in the garden and continue to cultivate it there like any other garden rose.
