The ivy plant (Epipremnum) is an arum plant that is native to tropical regions. In this country it is only grown as a houseplant. It cannot tolerate low temperatures. There are several species worldwide that differ in leaf color and growth habit.
Which types of ivy are known?
There are 15 known ivy species (Epipremnum) worldwide, which differ in leaf color and growth habit. Popular indoor varieties include Epipremnum aureum “Golden Queen”, “Marbel Queen”, “Wilcoxii” and Epipremnum variegata in various color patterns.
How many types of ivy are there?
So far 15 species are known worldwide. Varieties that have green leaves with white patterns are usually grown indoors. However, there are a number of varieties that are patterned differently.
The commercially available species mainly have green leaves with white inclusions. Species such as Epipremnum mirabile are also available in specialized nurseries.
Other names of the ivy are tonga plant and gold vine.
Ivy doesn't bloom in the room
Ivy plants do not bloom under room conditions. Even outdoors, the climbing plant rarely produces flowers. It is propagated indoors via cuttings because it does not produce offshoots.
Since the flower of the ivy plays no role, the climbing plant is grown exclusively for its leaves.
The foliage of ivy plants is yellow-green or dark green depending on the species and has stripes or spots in different colors.
Presentation of different varieties of ivy plant
- Epipremnum aureum “Golden Queen” – golden yellow leaves
- Epipremnum aureum “Marbel Queen” – creamy white leaves with green stripes
- Epipremnum aureum “Wilcoxii” – green leaves with yellow pattern
- Epipremnum variegata – depending on the variety with striped leaves and white, yellow or light green patterns
Leaf coloring only when there is sufficient light
The ivy only gets its strikingly variegated leaves when it is bright enough. In shady places the leaves remain green without the noticeable pattern.
If the leaves of the ivy become very pale, the plant is too sunny. Find a location where it gets more indirect light.
If the leaves turn yellow at the edges, you have probably fertilized too much. Be careful when fertilizing and use less fertilizer (€14.00 on Amazon) than recommended on the package.
Tip
Ivy plants need a lot of warmth and sufficiently high humidity. Temperatures should never drop below 15 degrees. The humidity must be increased, especially in winter, by spraying the leaves with water and setting up bowls with water.
