A hemp palm in a pot doesn't have to be repotted that often because it grows relatively slowly. When is repotting necessary when caring for a hemp palm and what do you have to pay attention to?

When and how should you repot a hemp palm?

To repot a hemp palm, choose early spring and a new pot that is slightly deeper and wider. Remove the palm tree from the old pot and carefully place it in fresh soil mixed with drainage material. After repotting, do not fertilize and do not place directly in the sun.

This tells you that the hemp palm needs to be repotted

As soon as roots grow out of the bottom of the pot, it's time to repot the hemp palm. Even if the palm tree seems to be pushing itself out of the container, it needs a new pot.

When is the best time to repot the hemp palm?

The best time for repotting is early spring. Check whether the hemp palm needs to be repotted when you take it out of winter quarters.

Choosing the right pot

Hemp palms form very long taproots. The pot for a hemp palm should therefore be deep rather than wide. A slim shape is more advantageous. But make sure that the bucket has a good footing and doesn't tip over easily.

There must be one or more drainage holes at the bottom so that irrigation water can drain away and waterlogging does not form.

It is recommended to create drainage made of sand or gravel in the bottom of the pot.

Which substrate is suitable?

You can use normal garden soil (€32.00 on Amazon) as a substrate, which you can make more water-permeable with some gravel, sand, quartz sand or lava granules.

Special palm soil is not necessary for hemp palms, as this type of palm is quite undemanding.

How to repot hemp palms

  • Unpotting the hemp palm
  • shake off old substrate
  • fill new pot with fresh soil
  • Insert hemp palm carefully
  • Fill up the soil and press it down carefully
  • water regularly
  • don't put it in direct sun straight away

The new pot should be only slightly deeper and wider than the old one.

Do not fertilize after repotting

After repotting, you must not fertilize the hemp palm for several months. The fresh soil contains sufficient nutrients. Additional fertilizer poses a risk of over-fertilization.

Tip

A hemp palm that you have planted outdoors is very difficult to replant. The palm trees are usually too big and the roots are too deep in the ground. Find a suitable location right away where the palm tree won't bother you later.
