Where lawnmowers usually cannot be used, a trimmer must help to bring the greenery in and around the garden back into shape. Since such work often has to be carried out in remote areas of the property where there is no power connection, this month we want to take a closer look at the range of cordless trimmers on offer. The do-it-yourself magazine “selbst.de” thoroughly tested the current market situation for these devices in its just published July issue. The test editors noted that many devices had unbalanced features and deficiencies in the clarity of some operating instructions, which means nothing other than:
Which properties are important when cutting lawn edges?
For the best results when trimming lawns, you should use a cordless trimmer that is easy to maneuver, ergonomic, allows horizontal cutting, and offers good runtime and mowing quality.
You should look carefully when you are planning to buy a new lawn trimmer, because there are a lot of criteria that the mini mowers have to meet, such as:
- Ergonomics: The devices and their adjustment devices should be easy to use even by slightly taller people and in an upright posture.
- Cutting on a wall: Is the grass trimmer easy to maneuver so that the line or blade is not damaged and what is the quality of the mowing in the hard-to-reach corner areas?
- Conversion: Can the trimmer be converted to horizontal operating mode, which would be optimal for edge cutting?
- Surface cutting: Can smaller surfaces be machined cleanly and evenly?
- Running time: Even when cutting slightly larger remaining areas, the charged battery should be able to handle the required workload.
- Rough cut: If something that is more stable and has grown over a longer period of time needs to be removed, can the trimmer do this without any problems?
- Safety check: Is it possible to work with the grass trimmer without endangering your he alth (protection device against unintentional switching on)?
Twelve cordless lawn trimmers from Bosch (€104.00 on Amazon), Gardena, Gardol (Bauhaus), Ikra, Lux Tools, Makita, Ryobi, Stihl, Wolf Garten and Worx were tested. Result:
- 1 time “very good”
- 8 times “good” and
- 3 times satisfactory
Quintessence: THE grass trimmer still doesn't exist; the results of the more than 40 different test criteria are too complex. Rather, every new owner of a cordless trimmer should definitely determine their own priorities before purchasing, because no device is without weaknesses. The very informative 6-page overview, which interested parties can download for 1.99 euros, helps.
Major differences in wear and cost of cutting tools
These are quite expensive resources that have to be constantly purchased and are not compatible between the individual brands. Here, too, it is worth taking a close look before making a purchase decision. While half of the devices tested use traditional plastic cutting threads, the remainder have six interchangeable plastic knives. Trimmers with these easily replaceable blades have lower power consumption and a better service life, but purchasing these knives again can sometimes be very expensive.
By the way: For those of our readers who have just bought a new cordless trimmer for their lawn: We are looking forward to a short assessment, perhaps with a picture and by email to us.
