It is a natural process that the zigzag bush loses a leaf every now and then. Neither poor care nor the wrong location are to blame for this. However, if the shrub loses a lot of leaves, you should check whether you are caring for it properly and whether it is in a favorable location.
Why is my zigzag bush losing leaves?
A zigzag bush loses leaves if the ambient temperatures are too high, the location is too dark or too sunny, or the root ball is too moist. As a countermeasure, the shrub should be placed in partial shade at 15 degrees and only watered when the substrate has dried out.
Why does the zigzag bush lose its leaves?
Possible causes for the loss of many leaves of the zigzag bush can be:
- Ambient temperatures too high
- too much sun
- Location too dark
- Root ball too moist
The most common reason for leaf loss is a location that is too warm. Basically, the zigzag shrub is more of a potted plant for the balcony or terrace. As a houseplant it is usually kept too warm. The ideal temperature for zigzag shrubs is 15 degrees during the growth phase. In winter it should be even cooler, but frost-free.
The right location for zigzag shrubs
The zigzag bush does not like direct sun. It is therefore better to place it in partial shade. When caring for it as a houseplant, make sure that it is adequately shaded in the flower window, especially during the midday sun.
Even if zigzag bushes don't like a place in direct sunlight - the location shouldn't be too dark. Make sure you have enough light.
Never water too much
The zigzag bush doesn't get too much moisture. Make sure that the root ball never completely dries out, but also that no waterlogging occurs.
Only water when the surface of the substrate has dried out. Always pour off excess water straight away. Place drainage made of gravel (€16.00 on Amazon) or sand in the bottom of the pot so that the roots are not directly in the water. If the root ball has become too moist, repotting it into fresh substrate will help.
In winter and in months with little light, the zigzag bush receives even less water than during the growth phase. Only water enough to keep the soil just moist. There is also no fertilization during the winter.
Tip
A special feature of the non-poisonous zigzag bush is that you must never fertilize it during the flowering period. If it receives fertilizer during this time, it will drop the pretty yellow flowers.
