Gravel gardens are “in” - no wonder, after all, these often very thoughtfully designed areas are not only beautiful to look at, but also very easy to care for. If you have no experience with creating such a garden, you can safely leave it to an experienced gardener - or read carefully and do it yourself. How much money is spent on the system ultimately depends on various factors.

How much does it cost to create a gravel garden?

The cost of creating a gravel garden varies greatly and depends on factors such as size, style, planting, types of stone, origin of materials and decorative elements required. If a gardener is hired, several thousand euros can be incurred, depending on the extent of the work.

Costs vary greatly

How expensive (or cheap) the finished gravel garden will be cannot be precisely quantified. There are too many factors that play a role, which of course influence the final price. This includes, for example, whether the location is already optimal - or whether it first needs to be made "suitable" - for example by excavating and replacing the soil. A complete replacement of the soil, possibly with an expensive removal of the excavation (unpleasant surprises such as buried building rubble containing asbestos are often found in old gardens), is of course not available in the proverbial apples and eggs. Other price influencing factors are

  • the planned size of the gravel garden
  • the planned style with the associated planting
  • how many plants – and which species – to buy
  • which types of stone are selected
  • and where to get them from
  • whether the garden will have a border, for example made of granite stones
  • or a fence or a low wall or a hedge
  • which other decorative elements should be installed
  • or maybe even a small arbor or a bridge like in a Japanese garden
  • whether a stream and/or a pond is part of the ensemble
  • or, or, or

The options for making a gravel garden expensive or cheap are just as varied as the design options themselves.

Have the gardener create a gravel garden

Of course, you can save yourself the effort and hire a gardener to do the system. However, depending on the size and scope of the work that may be required, plan on costs of several thousand euros. After all, in this case you not only pay the material costs, but also the personnel and labor costs. However, if you need help with planning, you can simply ask the gardener for advice (for an appropriate hourly rate, of course) and do the work yourself.

Tip

You can save on the amount of gravel you use by not necessarily choosing a fancy type of stone or by getting the stones (which can be very heavy depending on the size of the garden) from sources as close as possible.
